Lucia Newman: But, there was another side to the Lula regime. So he became an idol for many because of that. Thirty-three million people, many of whom were going hungry and who had no decent housing, no decent wages, who had never been on an aeroplane before. People who lived the way he had lived when he was a child. But most importantly of all, Lula became known as the man who helped the poor. Lucia Newman: He left office with more than 80 percent approval rating. He’s from the poorest part of this country. Lucia Newman: He does not have a formal education. He was vastly popular overseeing a left-wing agenda that saw strong economic growth and a reduction in inequality. Newsreel: Lula served eight years as president ending in 2011. Lucia Newman: Whom many regard as a man who saved Brazil and who actually catapulted Brazil out of poverty and misery and he’s a very interesting person. Lucia Newman: One of them is former two-time President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Lucia Newman: This is an election between two people that Brazilians know. Just start us off by explaining this election, it’s really between two men who’ve been in office before, isn’t it? Who are they? Halla Mohieddeen: Lucia, you’re in Brazil because of the upcoming elections. I am in Brazil right now and I’m currently in the largest city, São Paulo. Halla Mohieddeen: So with both candidates’ pasts full of controversy, Brazilians are left at a crossroads with picking who will offer the best path forward for their country.
